The socio-economic case for MPAs and an ambitious Ocean Act

A robust Ocean Act is essential to restore our seas and secure a

healthy ocean that supports Europe’s food supply, creates jobs, preserves the ways of life of coastal communities, and provides resilience to climate change. To deliver this, the EU Ocean Act should formally integrate into EU law commitments made on the international stage and in the EU Biodiversity Strategy to protect at least 30% of our ocean by 2030, including 10% under strict protection. It should also reinforce the EU’s ambition on effective marine conservation in a post-2030 framework. Rather than becoming an exercise in coordination only, the Ocean Act should ensure effective delivery by providing a coherent and enforceable framework. It should help to ensure the effective management, enforcement and monitoring of MPAs in order to support the coastal blue economy.
