Carnivorous Aquaculture: Eating up the Ocean, Threatening Food Security

Seafood consumption is increasing, putting pressure on wild fish populations and marine ecosystems. While policymakers and industry present aquaculture as a sustainable solution to meet the EU demand for seafood, intensive aquaculture, and in particular carnivorous aquaculture, has severe consequences for the ocean, wild fish, and the communities that rely on it. Its expansion would be incompatible with the EU’s objectives on sustainability and food security.

Within the context of Ocean Week and hosted by MEP Emma Fourreau with the participation of Compassion in World Farming and Foodrise, the event “Carnivorous Aquaculture: Eating up the Ocean, Threatening Food Security” will explore how the expansion of this industry can deplete ocean biodiversity, exacerbate food insecurity, and harm fish welfare.

Alongside presentations and a panel discussion featuring civil society, experts, and EU policymakers, Foodrise will preview the documentary “SEABASS INC” and reveal new research on European feed fisheries, and Compassion in World Farming will present a new report on Atlantic bluefin tuna farming. The event will follow a hybrid format with limited in-person capacity but will be open to all to join online.
